A little late to the party, but a few months ago I threw together a little site that lets you follow people on Twitter without having to actually follow them or sign up for a twitter account. You can grab your list via the web, RSS or email, and categorize people so all your Friends and Family are together, all your Industry Pundits are together, etc.

I’m not sure where to go with it, since there are plenty of other people out there creating very complex Twitter apps, but I’m glad I created it, and I’m glad it exists. I recently added a database search and individual user listings, and may tweak some more things in the future to highlight popular urls or tags.

I’ve got a DV camera on loan for a while, so I figured I’d take the opportunity to capture some of my old GL-1 footage. I logged about 10 hours of travel video, most of it from Europe, then then did a recut of one of my first short films, Munchies. I roughed it out in iMovie ‘08 and then brought it in to Final Cut Express for final polish. I’m not sure if I’m going to try to add a soundtrack or not. I created a short piece with GarageBand a while back, but nothing very long.

It’s weird to go back and fiddle with something you created in one night seven years ago. I’m not sure what else there is to say. Weird.

Back from the Dead

It’s been two years since my last post, and probably a year since I took this blog offline. I suppose that’s been enough penance.

I’ve been thinking more about blogging lately, since I’ve been sharing more of my life online, though mainly through Facebook. I stopped blogging because it wasn’t something I did regularly, and I took this blog offline because it was getting stale. Now with my iPhone I can post a blog post and pictures standing in line at the movies or waiting for an appetizer at a restaurant. You can literally post when the inspiration strikes, which was a lot harder in 2006 and nearly impossible in 2000 when I started blogging.

I don’t have any misconceptions about the contents of this blog being accessible and never disappearing. That’s life online, that’s the world we live in. You don’t get to pick and choose who gets to see what and still keep talking.

So I’m talking here again. I’ll probably be talking about some weird stuff, some boring stuff, and some stuff of questionable appropriateness. Stay tuned.

I’ve had an odd relationship with TV throughout my life. When I lived in Spain we had a TV but the local stations were all, obviously, in Spanish. We had VHS tapes and we’d watch Robin Hood or Star Wars or the Miracle of Birth sometimes.
When we moved back to the states we usually had a TV for the news, but shows like Scooby Doo were verboten. I’ve never really been into dramas, so the prime time cop shows never really did it for me. I loved the Fox afternoon lineup in the 90’s with Tiny Toons, Animaniacs and Tale Spin. I’d catch that every day. Eventually we got cable so I started watching more TV, probably way too much in retrospect.

When I moved into my own place I didn’t have a TV for a long time, but then DVDs started to hit so I decided to get a TV and a DVD player. My wimpy surround sound system that was designed for PCs was replaced with a beefier Sony, and eventually I got DirecTV. At the same time TiVo had broken on the scene so I picked up one of the original Series 1 units and paired it to my DirecTV reciever. Pause tv, season passes, TiVo recommendations, everything was good.

Then DirecTV and TiVo made their pact and came out with the integrated DirecTiVo devices, so I upgraded and handed down my series 1. The DirecTiVo was awesome. Record two shows at once while watching another, plus all the TiVo features? Awesome! Eventually I got another one, the second revision of the DirecTiVo for the bedroom.

Recently I’ve been pondering standard definition versus high definition TV and the future of in-home entertainment, and came to the conclusion that true nerdvana might still be a ways off in that space. DirecTV and TiVo split ways, and I’d rather not get cable. When I go to peoples houses that have cable the picture quality seems really bad compared to what I get at home with DirecTV. Maybe the hidef channels are better, but that’s only a handfull right now. Who knows what the cable industry’s going to do to mess with cablecard and TiVo next? Who knows if the Series 3 is actually a good investment or if something better’s going to come along in 6 months?

So I did the only sensible thing I could, I made the best of what I had. Our newer series 2 DirecTiVo got an upgrade, the 180 gig drive from my PC, an OS upgrade that turns on locked features, and a USB dongle. The old series 1 DirecTiVo got replaced with a sister of the series 2 we have from eBay, upgraded with a 300 gig drive, OS upgrade and another USB dongle.

Plug it all togeather and what do you get? 194 hours of recording time in the living room, 264 hours of recording time in the guest bedroom, network sharing back and forth of recorded tv shows between devices, home media option allowing for browsing of pictures, streaming MP3 music, and weather updates from PCs to the TiVo, web interfaces to both TiVos to set recording schedules, rate programs, and search guide data, and the ability to dump shows from the TiVo across the network to the PC and then to DVD, after editing out commercials. If that’s not standard definition TV nirvana, I don’t know what is.
Total cost for this upgrade? Around $250. $90 for a new 300 gig serial ata drive for the PC (freeing up the 180 gig), $75 for a used TiVo off of eBay, and $90 for a new 300 gig drive ata for the eBay TiVo. I had the USB adapters lying around.

I’m an election junkie. I’ve been looking forward to this election on pins and needles for weeks. Will we get our country back? Maybe we’ll know in a few hours…

Update: Oh Snap! Looks like we might just get our country back! We probably won’t know till Christmas, but it’s looking hopeful. I haven’t had much hope in this country for a while, and I think I’m actually starting to feel a spark of it. It feels good.

Car Tribbles

The Passat’s been having some trouble, little things here and there, the latest of which is the Ignition Control Module which decided to stop firing cylinder 2 as we pulled out of the Chick-Fil-A parking lot on Friday night. With Uncle Joe’s help we managed to diagnose it and ordered a replacement part, but today Irma and her mom took our other troubled car, a Honda delSol with 200,000 miles on it, to north Austin and it died on them. It looks like I won’t be making it into the office until the replacement ICM comes in via UPS next-day. Hopefully that’s all that’s wrong with the Passat. The cruise control’s gone out, but that’s not as critical.

Fall Arrives

It’s almost 1pm, and it’s 76 degrees and cloudy outside. Fall has officially arrived. I’m sure it’s just being a tease, and we’ll be in for sweltering heat at some point in the next few weeks, but the fact that it’s back from it’s vacation in the far north is great news. I’d forgotten what Fall was like. I have distant, hazy memories, but last fall was so full of wedding excitement that the weather area of my brain is completely blank. I seem to recall there’s something called a sweater, and if you’re feeling particularly stuck in the last decade, a flannel. I’ll need to see if I have one of those.San wa movie Catch That Kid ipod

We had a game night last night, and someone was kind enough to leave a Pear Cider here. I decided to give it a try, since I’m usually ok with ciders, and I’d never had a pear. Now that I’ve broken out in a sweat I’m thinking that was probably a bad idea. I know alcohol’s an aquired taste, I just don’t think it’s going to be a taste I’m going to aquire.

It Smells Like Poo

I got into the office this morning, there was a nice sprinkle going on outside and the temperature was lovely, so I opened the doors and let the breeze waft through. Eventually the temperature started to climb, so we closed the doors and kicked on the air conditioner. A few minutes later we started to notice a strange odor, something between garbage and poo, permiating the office. I took out the trash, checked the toilet, but neither of them seemed to be the culprits. We opened the doors again, but the oppressive Texas heat forced us to kick on the AC and endure the stench. I sprayed some Lysol a few minutes ago, so now the entire office smells like a day care center.

Reading the World

Every once in a while I’ll get on a reading kick. When I was younger, I read all the time. I read all the books I could get my hands on. As I got older, and more importantly, got a computer, that started to wane. Every once in a while I’ll chew through a couple of books in as many days, such as when we went on our honeymoon, but that’s the exception not the rule.

Lately I’ve been on a non-fiction roll. In the last week and a half I’ve churned through The Tipping Point, Blink, and The World is Flat. The one that really got to me, though, was the last. I’m the managing partner in a small consulting and development company. People depend on me to do the best I can so they can feed their kids, pay their mortgages, and generally keep going in the capitalist society we live in.

The World is Flat is all about globalization and what’s happening with markets, supply chains, and the global economy. Right now is both a scary and exciting time to be growing a business. There are challenges like never before, but there are also opportunities like never before. One of the San Fran design companies we work with has a really great HTML/CSS guy who works out of his flat in London. We could have programmers in India, China, the Ukraine. As long as they’re smart, have internet access, and we can communicate with them, they could be a part of our team.

That really makes you think about what makes your company different. What your teams skill sets are really tuned for. What you do better than anybody else. The guy down the street can have programmers in India, CSS guys in London, and system administrators in South Africa. He has access to talent that’s just as good as we do. In that kind of market, how do you take advantage of your specialized skill? How do you bring more value to your clients?

So that’s what I’ve been thinking a lot lately. I don’t have any great answers yet, but I definitely have some ideas.

. It just happened to be on the same weekend that the movie came out, but they didn’t dwell on that much. It’s really interesting to see just how the performance is put on, how often the only people on the stage are the ones doing the current act. We had seats in the first balcony, on the wings. A pretty good spot, but I’d much rather see them in a smaller venue. The folks on stage were nearly lost in the huge space. We had a great time, though, and the performance was super. Joe Ealy, Molly Ivins, and The High-Flyers. I managed to grab the show off of some public radio MP3 streams, so I have it for posterity.

The night before we’d gone to Chisholm Trail, the yearly summer fair/carnival in Lockhart. That was fun, lots of greasy carnival food and a dollar for a tiny cup of lemonade. At least it’s going to a good cause. Irma and I rode a ride and I felt like I was nearly going to horf. I’m getting too old, I guess. The BBQ cookoff was yesterday, but we had Prairie Home Companion tickets, so we didn’t get to partake. A BBQ cookoff in Lockhart, imagine that.

In other news, I hear the Ikea being build in Round Rock is ahead of schedule. It’s supposed to open this year. Exciting! I can’t wait to put the finishing touches on the house with cartloads of Ikea trinkets.Creepshow 2 dvdGarfield Gets Real dvdrip

We’ve been thinking about adding a small fuzzy, waggly member to our new family for a while, and one of the things that’s been holding us back is the state of our back yard. Last weekend Irma said she wanted grass in the back yard (grass? in the yard?) so we went to Lowes to buy grass seed. Turns out all the grass seeds want you to till the dirt to 4-6 inches, till in some fertalizer, and then plant the grass seed. So we wandered over to NationsRent, and picked up a big gas-powered Honda tiller. Four hours of being dragged by the too-eager tiller later the it looked like a war zone, but was pretty much ready for fertalizer. We didn’t bother re-renting the tiller to till in the fertalizer, we just spread it out when we spread the grass seed, and then started watering like crazy. We went to Lowes again last night to pick up a sprinkler, so I don’t have to stand out there for hours with a hose. Hopefully in a few days we’ll see some grass shoots. We could use some rain, too. Trials

The last couple of days, actually the last couple of weeks, have been… challenging. The kind of trials that wear on you. Nothing so horrible that your life falls apart, but man, it sure makes you feel like going to bed early. Two weeks ago yesterday the timing belt on our VW Passat Wagon broke, resulting in damage to the head and pistons. Then we were down to one car, Irma’s 94 Honda Del Sol that has 202,450 miles on it. That car has it’s own set of issues. Irma’s dad swapped the spark plugs, but the battery’s been dying for a while, Wednesday one of the tires was flat and Thursday when it was really cold the car wouldn’t start in the morning. Lacking other transportation options I ended up walking to the auto parts store to get a battery. On the way back I wised up and rode the bus for a few blocks, since car batteries aren’t light. At least it was a new experience.

Then at about 4am on Friday morning Irma woke me up in severe pain, so we went to Seton Medical Center where they started shoving morphine into her. Turned out it was a kidney stone that had mostly passed, but not quite, so they admitted her until they could get a urologist over. Irma stopped having severe pains at around 9am, but unfortunately the urologist who was supposed to be there around lunch time fell asleep and didn’t wake up till like, 8pm, so we ended up spending the night at the hospital. They didn’t want to give her anything to eat or drink because she might have had a procedure, but when the urologist finally called in around 9pm he said she could eat, and if she kept it down would probably be discharged in the morning. Since the cafeteria was closed we ended up having microwaved Healthy Choice meals for dinner, and Irma was finally discharged today around noon. So now we’re home, a little worse for wear. Cleaning House

Spring cleaning is upon us. Last weekend we spent most of our time cleaning out closets, sorting through clothes we didn’t even know we had, dropping off boxes and bags of clothes at Goodwill, and generally divesting ourselves of vast quantities of junk. I think I have a problem throwing things away wholesale, because I know it could still be of some use, but I don’t have that problem nearly as much when I’m giving it to Goodwill. I just can’t bring myself to throw something away that’s still good, even if I don’t need it and it’s presence is an impediment to my life.

I’d really like to go home right now and keep cleaning, but I guess I have to put in my time at work. Dag-nabbit!BloodRayne trailer
