New Toys?

I’ve been working on cutting down my debt load for a while, and I’ve almost reached a point where the credit card companies can go jump off a cliff, but I’m not quite there yet. The goal is in sight, however, and I’ve been thinking a little about what kind of neat thing I’ll get myself when I finally reach the goal. It’s amazing how priorities change when you’ve got a monetary goal you’re working towards. Going out to eat becomes pretty low priority. Irma and I used to go to Chilis all the time, and I can’t even remember the last time we went. Dropping $40 on a meal just seems wasteful. I go to the Chinese super-buffet here in town with Chad alot, though he usually pays, but that’s only around $15 for two people. Is the experience at Chilis three times as good? No, not really. The food’s a little nicer, but I could do a lot with $25.

When the cash was flowing like crazy in the dot com days this wasn’t as much of an issue. When you’re getting $5k checks every couple of weeks dropping $40 on dinner isn’t even something you think about. I hope that I won’t revert to my old ways once I’m out of debt. Our next financial hurdle is to sock away enough cash to buy a house, but that’s not quite as high pressure.

Anyway, back to the shiny thing I’m going to get myself when I’m out of debt. I’m not sure what kind of thing I should get. I’d like to get a thing that actually has value, something I’ll use, but is a little bit of an extravagance. Like a really nice version of something I’ve got already that I use all the time.
